Fear of failure, the pressure to succeed, financial instability, lack of routine, and loneliness is part of many music makers’ everyday life. To some artists, these challenges have even become “normal standards” that you just have to deal with if you want to make it in the music biz. But they are not! For this reason, we believe that it’s important to develop an understanding of general mental health among music makers, and ignite a larger conversation to break the stigma around mental illness in music.

Mental health expert: Joe Barnby

Doctoral researcher

Joe Barnby is a doctoral researcher at King’s College in London, researching the neuroscience and psychology of belief and delusion formation. He holds a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Science and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Neuroscience. Joe is also a research scientist at a mental health technology company and is frequently giving talks on mental health and neuroscience.
